At the end of the 1990s, PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) was established as what is now the largest independent system for ensuring sustainable forest management. Wood and paper products carrying the PEFC seal are verifiably sourced from ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable forestry. PEFC is based on the agreements of the European Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe.

Currently, more than 40 national certification systems have successfully completed the PEFC recognition process. Worldwide, approximately 300 million hectares of forest are certified under PEFC.

PEFC goes beyond mere forest management and considers the flow of wood through to end consumers. Every link in the chain, the so-called chain of custody (CoC), from the sawmill to the paper manufacturer to the printing company, requires certification.
